Charlie Reed is a multi-instrumentalist and teacher active in baroque and modern cello as well as viola da gamba. He has collaborated with distinguished musicians such as Catherina Meints and Mark Edwards, and with groups such as Les Arts Florissants and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. As part of Juilliard415 he has worked with conductors Rachel Podger, Masaaki Suzuki, Richard Egarr, Kris Bezuidenhout, Nicolas McGegan, and Robert Mealy. As a soloist he has performed with the Ashland Symphony Orchestra, and presented recitals in Ohio, New York, and Connecticut. Currently, he is focusing on historical improvisation and composition as a member of Nuova Pratica, a New York based group of historical composers and performers. He recently finished a Masters at the Juilliard School as the school’s first double major in gamba and baroque cello, studying with Sarah Cunningham and Phoebe Carrai. His other mentors have included Steve Doane, Christel Thielemann, Amir Eldan, and Cathy Meints. He previously studied at Oberlin Conservatory and the Eastman School of Music, where he received the prestigious Performer's Certificate. He teaches cello at Zeta Charter Schools in upper Manhattan and the Bronx, as well at Fort Lee School of Music. He is currently pursuing training in the Suzuki method through the School for Strings in Manhattan with noted pedagogue and teacher-trainer Pam Devenport.
